Gallery Opening: The Living Edge: Contemporary Craft in Texas

This exhibition brings together San Antonio artists who expand craft traditions through textiles, wood, metal, ceramics, and hybrid media—showing how the intelligence of the hand turns making into meaning. Featuring Leo Barrios, Margaret Craig, Casey Galloway, Diana Kersey, Sarah Sauer, Alejandro Sifuentes, the work treats craft as a way of knowing: embodied knowledge built through touch, repetition, and long attention to material.

Rooted in San Antonio’s layered lineage—from early tradespeople and architectural artisans to the legacy of the Southwest School of Art (now UTSA Southwest)—the exhibition also reflects the city’s borderlands identity, shaped by migration and cultural exchange. In a moment of rapid automation and increasingly disembodied production, these works reaffirm the value of presence: objects that carry time, care, and human choice. Moving between utility and contemplation, they position San Antonio as both steward and innovator—a place where heritage and experimentation meet, and where new material languages are being forged.

Co-curated by Jon Hinojosa and Katy Silva

Gallery Opening: Thursday, April 9th, 6:30-8:30pm, Agarita Loft

Note: the Loft is on the 2nd floor and only accessible by stairs and chairlift (no elevator).

Roots to Rhapsodies: Folk Traditions Reimagined, and Baroque Forms Revitalized

Featuring Venezuelan violinist Rubén Rengel from New York City, this virtuosic program traces the many ways composers have drawn from folk traditions, sometimes directly, sometimes through memory and transformation. From the blues-inflected second movement of Ravel's Violin Sonata No. 2 in G Major to the grounded, raw vitality of Bartók's Violin Rhapsody No. 1, this concert explores how local musical languages — dance, song, and storytelling — become reimagined by classical forms. Along the way, works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Johann Sebastian Bach offer a reflective counterpoint.

Featuring Daniel Anastasio, piano and Rubén Rengel, violin

Gallery Closing: Mark | Trace | Gesture

Mark | Trace | Gesture invites viewers into the raw language of painting stripped of story and subject. This exhibition focuses on the primal acts of making — the brushstroke, the imprint, the movement across canvas — where each mark is both a record of presence and a meditation on form. Rather than illustrating a narrative, these works highlight process and immediacy: paint as energy, surface as field, gesture as meaning. The exhibit asks audiences to slow down, to see the hand in motion, and to experience painting as a living dialogue between artist, material, and moment. Featuring art by Robin Gara, Louis Vega Trevino, Mary James, Suzanne Paquette and Paula Owen.

For composers in the 21st century, it can feel like the possibilities for acoustic instruments, especially those that come from the Western European tradition of Classical Music, have been exhausted. Reclaimed Realities: What we keep—and what we throw away—shapes the stories we tell about ourselves. Reclaimed Realities gathers artists—Jorge Garza, Jeanie Sanders, Ward Sanders, Craig Bunch, Ian Eskander, and Jon Hinojosa—who work in the deep tradition of the readymade and assemblage, from Duchamp’s audacious selection to Kurt Schwitters’s Merz constellations, Joseph Cornell’s poetic boxes, Louise Nevelson’s shadowed altars, and the charged social meanings carried forward by artists like Betye Saar and Noah Purifoy. Their materials—weathered wood, cast-off hardware, cabinet drawers, book remnants, typography, textile scraps—arrive already inscribed with time. Through acts of choosing, juxtaposing, and fixing, these fragments are edited into new worlds.

Dada & Assemblage: Reclaimed Realities

Join the artists highlighted in our Reclaimed Realities exhibit. This fast-paced lecture dives into the irreverent spirit of the Dada and readymade movements—where chance, humor, and rebellion cracked open the very definition of art. We’ll trace how artists transformed everyday objects into radical statements, from Duchamp’s subversive gestures to the rise of assemblage as a vehicle for protest, poetry, and play. The session then connects these historic provocateurs to the contemporary voices of Reclaimed Realities, spotlighting how today’s artists reimagine discarded materials, elevate overlooked objects, and challenge cultural narratives with the same fearless spark. Expect sharp insights, unexpected connections, and a fresh look at how chaos, critique, and creativity collide.

Play that Back!

Playing “Correctly”

There is so much to learn as a classical musician: technique, style, articulation, dynamic nuance, theory, form, and more. All of this information feels required and somewhat objective, leading to the idea of becoming a “better” musician. The phenomenon of recording has only added weight to this psychological pressure, with edited recordings producing “perfect” versions of artists’ interpretations. If one’s motivation as a musician survives years of perceived imperfection, unworthiness, and self-doubt, there need to be ways to revitalize the pure, childlike connection to music that has nothing to do with the details of a musical career. In this talk, and with musical demonstrations, I will explain why and how the pursuit of a classical music career can be intensely de-motivating and uninspiring, and illustrate ways in which tangible, emotion-driven interpretations can inspire the performer to remember why they’re doing any of this in the first place.
