Susan Calkins

I am a sculptor working primarily in stone and metal, creating works that evoke movement, connection, and transformation. My artistic journey began at Trinity University, where I discovered my talent for stone carving. My defining moment came while working at the San Antonio Art Institute, where I realized that art was not just a passion but a way to inspire, uplift, and connect people.

For over a decade, I worked in a community art center, sharing my passion and encouraging others to find their creative voice.

Now, I spend time focusing on my own artwork and projects. I primarily work with limestone, alabaster, marble, travertine, and calcite, selecting stones that encourage both durability and intricate expression. Each piece invites viewers to pause, touch, and experience a moment of stillness and connection.

In my metalwork, I often incorporate elements of weaving and textile patterns, inspired by quilting—a symbol of warmth, history, and community. These sculptural pieces reflect stories of resilience and interconnectedness, celebrating culture, memory, and the human experience.
