Marian Herrero, viola

Spanish violist Marian Herrero has established herself as a highly regarded musician in both chamber music and orchestral settings. She has performed throughout Europe, the United States, Morocco, Israel, and Mexico, appearing at prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, La Scala in Milan, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Auditorio de Zaragoza, and Ciudad de León, among others. Most recently, she performed a viola recital with her husband, Daniel del Pino, at the renowned Newport Classical Music Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.

Ms. Herrero has collaborated with several distinguished orchestras, including the Spanish Radio Television Orchestra, Orquesta de Cámara de España, Chamber Academy Basel, Camerata Da Vinci, and the New Mexico Philharmonic. She has worked with renowned conductors such as Diego Matheuz, Andrea Marcon, Jaime Martín, Pinchas Steinberg, Walter Weller, David Afkham, Jonathan Nott, and Franz Welser-Möst.

Currently based in the United States, she is an active member of the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, frequently serving as guest principal violist. She performs with other orchestras, including the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and the Mount Vernon Virtuosi in the Baltimore area.

As a performer of early music, Ms. Herrero regularly collaborates with Baroque ensembles such as Tiento Nuovo and Hippocampus. She is involved in the project “Jorge Pardo & Hippocampus: Por Bach” alongside renowned flamenco flutist Jorge Pardo. She recorded the Avison-Scarlatti Concerti Grossi with Tiento Nuovo, which won the “Diapason D’Or” prize in 2021. Additionally, she participated in the project La Nitteti with the Baroque ensemble Nereydas, performing and recording the recently discovered opera by Niccolò Conforto, alongside singers Nuria Rial and María Espada. This project was recognized with the GEMA prize for Best Early Music Group in Spain in 2024.

As a member of the Habemus Quartet, Ms. Herrero has recorded several albums for the Non-Profit Music label, including In Crescendo and Whispering Colors, which feature world premiere works by emerging composers.

As an educator, she has taught at several conservatories in Madrid and is a certified Suzuki teacher through the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA). She also maintains a growing private studio in Lubbock, Texas. She is currently completing her doctorate at Texas Tech University under the guidance of Prof. Philippe Chao, where she also serves as his teaching assistant and coach of the string ensemble, TTU Sinfonietta.

Born in Madrid, Marian Herrero holds a Master’s degree in Music Performance from the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, Switzerland, where she studied with Prof. Silvia Simionescu and a Minor Baroque Viola degree with Prof. David Plantier in the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Some of the teachers that have deeply inspired her throughout her career include Ana María Alonso, David Quiggle, Natacha Tchitch, Jürgen Kussmaul, Antonello Farulli, Rainer Schmidt, and Sergio Azzolini.
